Colorado residents who are aiming to apply for citizenship will probably want to keep a checklist. In order to apply for citizenship, there are a number of things that you need to deal with beforehand.

First of all, you must already be 18 years of age. You need to be the holder of a green card. If you aren’t already married to a U.S. citizen, then you must have resided within the country for five years at minimum at the time of your application. Of those years, you must have spent half physically within the country. You may not have spent over one consecutive year outside of the country, or have established a primary home in another country. You may also be exempt from this requirement if your green card was received through political asylum or if you are classified as a refugee. Finally, you must have been residing in the current district or state that you live in for a minimum of three months before filing.

Other personal aspects of yourself and your abilities may be examined, too. For example, you must be able to read, write and speak English. You need to have what qualifies as a “good moral character”. You must be able to pass a civics test, which includes questions about the U.S. government and history. And finally, you must swear an oath to be loyal to the U.S. and believe in the principles of the U.S. Constitution.
